I remember going to Berkely to see Alien when it premiered. Every new film in the franchise added to the story of the Alien. Prometheus really pushed it forward by giving some promising clues to the origin. I think I liked it more than most Alien fans did. I felt a little cheated with Covenant because it withheld information. David had lots of time to learn about the Engineers, yet the very little information was forthcoming. Prometheus gave us a lot of questions, and the answers to those questions were left unanswered in Covenant. This isn't Lost or Twin Peaks. Questions shouldn't be compounded with more questions. Do we wait until all the films are made then buy the set on DVD?

I love the Alien franchise. I love Prometheus. I love Alien (1979), I didn't like AlienS (just simply not a fan of James Cameron direction) I hated Alien 3 (because of story and art direction it took that is completely out of art style of the franchise) and Alien 4 (this movie was good on art direction but was just silly). The Alien: Covenant was frustrating. And in my opinion, this happened because Fox Studios decided to reduce their risks and make a dumbed-down blockbuster that has Aliens (xenomorphs) in it. Even though this potentially could have been a good continuation of Prometheus that answers questions asked in Prometheus and the film that could connect this two stories of Alien (1979) and Prometheus. But only if Fox Studios were to take that risk. Don't get me wrong it is not a bad movie. It has beautiful visuals. But there were parts in this movie that can't be ignored.
Good things in Covenant: The first part of the story was good. You can see attempts to establish conflicts in the crew of the Covenant but later all these conflicts fade away and look unnecessary. Visuals are fantastic, you can see the direction of Ridley Scott in each shot of this movie. It looks gorgeous. And I should also mention that audio and music in Covenant were great.
Bad things in Covenant: Story. After the first part of this movie, it starts to look like the story was written by a child that tries to answer hard questions about life and evolution and at the same time, this child is forced to make as much plot twists as possible. But it wasn't the plot twists that made Alien (1979) such a good movie, it was tension and suspense that made first Alien movie. The fear of deadly horror that is somewhere near and there is nowhere to run away from it. But Covenant with its plot twists and gore looks like Slasher B-movie. With cliche such as "I will go away from the group even though I know, there is a killer wandering around" If you loved Alien (1979) then you will most likely see this film as an insult to the Alien. And if you at least liked Prometheus and expect some revelations about it in this film, you will be highly disappointed.
